My first introduction to a PC was the Apple II. I was able to work with both the hardware and software.

My first computer at home was a Commodore Vic 20. The same experience as well as being able to pick a monthly off-the-shelf magazine for it that included the source code for several programs each month. The first program I copied¹ from the magazine was a game with a tiny ship that you flew through asteroids and space caves. I modified the code to give it "hyper jump" capabilities.

The point being, change your statement to being with "In the beginning of the Microsoft PC..." and then I'd agree.

1) Heh, wouldn't that give some of the heavy intellectual property proponents today a hernia: a magazine that actually allowed it's readers to have the source code for use and exploration.
