Are drive failures really that common?

You're missing we're discussing Solid State Drives here - which have recognised
failure modes. Bit like some early hard or floppy drives could be quickly
destroyed by calling the heads home and smashing them into the stop once too
often.

I agree with you - in all my time with minis and PCs, I've only ever handled one
drive that was so dead I couldn't recover the data (a friend's 60Gb :-(, but
SSDs are a completely different kettle of fish ...
