State Warned on ditching copyrighted software (Kenya)
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, September 18 2012 @ 12:38 PM EDT
Regarding the Standard Digital News
Yes, FOSS is (generally) copyrighted, but the big news is that Microsoft is liable for losses due to cracking. Those endless EULAs have always disclaimed any liability of any kind beyond replacing defective media.
"Just like other players in the copyrighted software, we are accountable when our software is hacked..."
Would someone please post the new Microsoft, Adobe, Oracle, etc. EULAs that show this liability? --DonW

I thought there were laws against making knowingly false
PR/Advert statements and claims.

If not, there should be.

Apple/Rim Intervene in Kodak
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, September 18 2012 @ 02:19 PM EDT
Can someone with a better legal mind comment on this. It seems like these
companies would want Kodak to fail and have been granted permission to make
Kodak's case for it. I really do not understand.

Neelie Kroes: Copyright and Innovation in the Creative Industries
Authored by: Gringo_ on Tuesday, September 18 2012 @ 08:13 PM EDT

Very interesting talk by Neelie Kroes. She speaks as if ACTA never happened. How strange to hear someone talking about "copyright reform", as if it was something we can do ourselves, through our elected representatives, without copyright policies being dictated top-down fashion by the copyright organizations such as the MPAA and RIAA. It would be nice to believe that possible, but surely the copyright organizations know best, wouldn't you think?

Maybe the contractor that distorted their field should be identified.

Sounds like backtracking and maybe renaming some products in reaction to the
outrage :p.

DICE buys Slashdot
Authored by: YurtGuppy on Wednesday, September 19 2012 @ 04:22 PM EDT

Scene from my memory. About 1995.
Des Moines.

I'm in a server room with a whole lot of dial-in modem equipment. Folks from
DICE. They are asking me if I think this Internet thing is going to stay or is
it just a fad.

I told them it's the real deal.

And the rest is history.
