Intel's new Clover Trail chip will support Android & Linux
Authored by: PolR on Wednesday, September 19 2012 @ 02:11 PM EDT
From the snip in news pick:
"Intel has plans for another version of this platform directed at Linux/Android; however we are not commenting on the platform specifics or market segments at this time. Stay tuned.”
They are not denying they have a Win 8 only chip. They just say that perhaps, maybe, there will be a separate Linux/Android chip but it is all plans for now and we should stay tuned.

Why do I smell some convenient vaporware announcement?

The main issue remains. When Win8 hardware is released it is not supposed to run Linux/Android and if you try you won't be supported. For anything which is not Win8 you need to change the hardware.

The words from the Intel email mean the opposite of what SVN is saying they mean. They try to cloud the issue by calling both the Win8 chip and the vaporware chip Clover Trail and say that Linux/Android is supported by Clover Trail. This is just a shell game. The fact remains that we can no longer use the same chip for both Windows an Linux and be supported.

Intel's new Clover Trail chip will support Android & Linux

I think it is pretty obvious what is going on here...

Intel, AMD and Microsoft are all under threat from ARM/Linux
(Android). Today's ARM chips can provide a higher level of
performance than is needed by over 90% of everyday users -
Practically every Phone, Tablet, Set-Top Box, etc. uses a
non Intel/AMD CPU and runs a non-Microsoft OS (mainly
Android or iOS, but even mobile OS's you haven't even heard
of trounce Microsoft in market share)

So Intel, AMD and Microsoft are teaming up to save their
collective hides - a case of don't deal with the devil
unless you are also a devil.

I've been trying to do development work with Intel and AMD
embedded chips for about 2 years now. I switched over to an
ARM chip two month ago. I got more support and information
in one week than I got from Intel/AMD in two years.
Intel/AMD just don't get it. They left the development
community behind, and now the community is leaving them
behind.

This latest ploy is simply a case of shoring up the defences
around a sad and sorry castle. In the end, nobody will
bother attacking the castle as all the lands that castle
hold are desolate and barren. Sure, Intel/AMD/Microsoft will
keep rolling out meaningless stats that show they are the
biggest and best in some obscure corner of the market.

I really don't care that 'Microsoft are forcing vendors to
lock Linux out' or 'Intel/AMD are making chips that can't
run Linux'. In the end, they will represent such a small
percentage of the market that we can all collectively say
'Who Cares!'
