Anything with an SD card in it will use some variant of the
FAT file-system (otherwise cards would not be
interchangeable between other devices which invariably use
FAT, and would have to be formatted specifically for the
device)
FAT based file-systems require licensing from Microsoft. I
believe this is the main
reason the Nexus devices are tending away from SD (the other
reasons being reducing complexity of the file-system - only
one device to store stuff on, no apps2SD issues - and to
encourage people to use cloud storage.)
Conscientious consumers wishing to avoid sponsoring evil
companies should have pause for thought when considering
devices that support SD cards. They are unfortunately hard

I understand that not everyone wants to, but if you root the
Nexus 7 you can use a USB on the the good adapter and plug
in any kind of us being storage drive. Without rooting it,
but you can still use usb keyboards, mice,... Just not
storage devices.
Now, the Nexus 7 screen breaks easily or so they say so it
