How would a permanent injunction work?

What you say may or may not be correct for the future, but in the past, it seems they have just committed copyright infringement. That, and they annoyed the copyright holder by suing them for patent infringement, so RedHat isn't going to drop this.

What isn't quite clear to me is: What is actually the legal situation for the future? Can RedHat say "you went against the GPL license, so you will _never_ have a license for this code ever again", or can they download a fresh copy with a fresh GPL license and then distribute it in the future according to GPL terms? Has that been tested in court?
