"New feature": iPhone 5 not back compatible for free...
Authored by: DannyB on Wednesday, September 12 2012 @ 02:30 PM EDT
Considering Apple's pretty white charger with a white USB cable is $80 at Best
Buy (as of a few weeks ago), I wonder what this "adapter" will cost?

This adapter requires at least an LSI chip and some powered electronics.

Meanwhile the aftermarket peripherals...

ibamboospeaker.com says they are "temporarily out of stock"
Not just a matter of the new 8 pin plug, they can't use the
adapter and will have to reprint their literature to warn
that the adapter will throw their acoustics waaay off...

ONLY Apple will be able to sell the Lightning Plug
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, September 13 2012 @ 12:16 PM EDT
This new connector is actually quite innovative. It has 8 metal fingers in an
insulating ceramic pad on each side of the plug. The signals are duplicated on
each side, in order, so that both of the two ways you can plug it in is correct.
The connector is a solid metal ground pin encasing the signal contact pads.
VERY robust. The socket is also robust.

The broken connector problems you encounter with most small plug/socket pairs
will be reduced. Very, very much reduced. From a customer service perspective,
Apple will have lower costs due to the increased reliability of their new
connector.

Now the kicker... ONLY Apple will be able to produce this connector for sale.
The solid metal plug with embedded ceramic contact pads needs very specific
technology. Patented technology called Liquid Metal. Apple has an EXCLUSIVE
license to the technology.

So, no cheap plugs from other manufacturers. The patent moat keeps them out of
the market, and Apple will man the walls with lawyers, and keep the drawbridge
up.

Apples walled garden is starting to look like more like a castle. Or is that a
prison?
