As I understand, the stock version of Android Google provides the phone
manufacturers comes with a lot of freedom - and not a lot of the apps that will
show up on a manufacturer's phone.
The companies then proceed to modify
what they want - it is controlled by the Apache license after all. They lock
down the device for their choice of phone apps and install their own - like the
Samsung Apps selection.
They then hand that off to a distributor - such
as AT&T - who then proceeds to lock the phone into their specific network...
at the least.
Given Motorola (now owned by Google) has recently made it
available to start unlocking devices, are you really
sure Google is the guilty party locking down phones? Are you really sure
Android - Google's Android, not the Manufacturer's Android - is to
blame?
Granted... Motorola used to be in that other group and now they've
joined up with Google. There's lots of work to be done with regards unlocking
and providing base systems that the owner truly can fully choose which apps are
to be installed. Lots of work that won't be completed overnight.
Perhaps
we should give Google and Motorola a chance to produce the kind of product at
least some of us in the marketplace desire before we blame them for the locking
that's being done by other parties.
