bugstomper: are comment threads being deleted?
Authored by: qubit on Sunday, September 09 2012 @ 08:48 PM EDT
It's a bug that we can't fix without bad other consequences,...
ah, I see.
In general, the rule is that if you are anonymous, it's better not to have you open the corrections thread. Some members prefer to avoid all anonymous comments, and they can once they have a membership.
Yes, I do see that I have some choices in my preferences. However sometimes the ACs do seem to have something useful to say, so I'm reticent to take aim at the problem with such a broad sword instead of a scalpel! :-)
And if you see an anonymous corrections thread, it's better if you don't comment there. Look for the right one. Those who choose not to see anonymous comments would never see your comments if you open the thread as anonymous or comment on that thread.
Right, it's just that stories are often posted and being commented-on for a while before a logged-in user gets around to adding the default threads.

What would you think about adding those threads automagically whenever a new story is posted? I think that it shouldn't be too difficult to add a hook to the underlying system so that templates for the comments could be used to create each default post. I haven't hacked on the GeekLog code previously, but I'd be happy to grab the source and see how difficult such a task might be, if that's something that could be useful for Groklaw.

You have been a member a couple of years, so I'm surprised you are surprised, frankly, but whatever. Perhaps it's the first time it happened to you. I know it can be disturbing.
I can't recall ever having a comment disappear previously, but it's possible that I just missed it.
I wish there was a perfect system, but there isn't one that I've ever found, and this is the best for what we deal with here.... I just have to prioritize, and I do.
Oh I totally understand that the site requires a lot of work, and I think that we're all quite grateful for your contributions and leadership. I was happy to help transcribe a few dozen pages from Comes, and I'd be happy to try my hand at coding-up a fix to insert default threads for us. Please let me know.

Cheers,
--Q
