bugstomper: are comment threads being deleted?
Authored by: PJ on Sunday, September 09 2012 @ 01:22 PM EDT
It's a bug that we can't fix without bad other consequences, because in the system, moderators can put comments in limbo, so they are not visible to most readers, and then I follow up and either delete or leave them or put them back. That can mess up the thread. And it can take quite a while for me to get to it.

It's only deleted if I do that myself. That gives me time to work with things, without having to deal with spam or trolls or whatever the issue is. I'm a volunteer myself and I'm also not a robot, so I'm not online 24/7. So I need a system. Spammers sometimes are bots, and so the system keeps Groklaw clean for the most part so it is manageable. Sometimes people make a big deal about it, but it's something that I need to be able to do Groklaw at all and to make sure that nasty spam and such doesn't see the light of day for long. We had a lot of that before we had this system. I was up all night with the team night after night, and that gets old fast.

In general, the rule is that if you are anonymous, it's better not to have you open the corrections thread. Some members prefer to avoid all anonymous comments, and they can once they have a membership. And if you see an anonymous corrections thread, it's better if you don't comment there. Look for the right one. Those who choose not to see anonymous comments would never see your comments if you open the thread as anonymous or comment on that thread. Log in and then post. I realize sometimes we all forget and think we are logged in when we are not. Not a big issue. But it isn't helpful for me to have two threads on the same thing, and I could miss corrections that way. So I'd appreciate everyone's cooperation. You have been a member a couple of years, so I'm surprised you are surprised, frankly, but whatever. Perhaps it's the first time it happened to you. I know it can be disturbing.

I wish there was a perfect system, but there isn't one that I've ever found, and this is the best for what we deal with here. Your comment is still there . But it's not visible in certain views until I either delete or whatever the original mistaken opening of the thread. Even then, it's a bit choppy, but better that than endless offensive spam and other stuff. I just have to prioritize, and I do.
