his replacement dumps the consumer stuff

The problem with MicroSoft is that they have never been a company dedicated to
creating a product that people want to use. DOS was what came with the IBM PC
and later, MS allowed other PC makers to license their DOS so that the makers
could claim IBM compatibility. This, rather than a dedication to having the
best
product, coupled with a ruthless attitude towards competitors drive the
Microsoft of today. They continue to try to recreate the perfect storm that was

the beginning of the company and fail. This is why Microsoft seems so
directionless.

No it wouldn't.

In the short term, maybe, their share-holder returns might look better. But the
only reason they have the near monopoly they do is that almost nobody can
imagine a PC that doesn't run Windows and have Office available.

Once everybody's home PC runs A.N.Other OS, whatever it is, that whole situation
is destroyed. Sure it would take a while -- it's difficult to replace 20,000 PCs
quickly -- but eventually their enterprise business would evaporate.

In the face of Linux and LibreOffice, their only viable business plan would be
to give away Windows and Office and compete on services, and in that world
Windows and Office become a hindrance -- far better to provide support for any
and all OSs and applications than just one of each. If they survived at all,
they would not be the MS that we know today.
