That's what you get when you're working on an open framework.

Anything major will use a pre-written database back
end. It may
not be designed to export information, but any real database
has admin tools
which will allow direct access to the db. It will not be
'impossible' to export
the data. It may just need external access to the
db.
Identifying which pre-written database can be
problematic. Not all of
them have known magic numbers. If the software was
written early
enough (prior to circa 2000), it is a toss up as to whether a
pre-written
database was used, or the developer created their own. In either
instance, finding admin tools for it might be problematic.
And in the case of the Vet, there is no reason why he
cannot set up a new
system and run them side by side during the teething period
until he is
satisfied with the new system. If it all goes pear-shaped for his
purposes,
he's only out the hardware cost and any technical
help.
How much will it cost the vet to have that software
written?
More precisely, is that cost within their budget? It is very easy
to claim
that the long term cost of FLOSS is lower than that of non-FLOSS, but
migration costs can make it appear to be far more expensive in both the
short
term, and the long term.
All that said, there are half a dozen projects
on SourceForge that claim to
be able to handle the needs of a vet's clinic. Two
of them also claim to
be used at RSCPA clinics.

I see many small businesses from Auto shops, dentists, vets,
small manufacturing, farming, and more... who have those
Windows apps that there is no equal in Linux.
And, if easy to do, why hasn't anyone written a replacement
for Quickbooks (and also the Quickbooks payroll add-on that
runs like a top, with the right tax information).
Needs to be done enough to switch over on a weekend, and not
have employees or the boss know any difference come Monday
when they arrive at work.
