I don't understand why everyone is bent out of shape over this because
Apple
patented it.
It's psychological. To some people, anything that Apple
does is evil right now.
What does this patent actually do? It is not a
patent for a box that can turn off
all phones in a 100 meter radius. It's a
patent for making a phone that can be
turned off remotely. So if Apple put this
into all their phones, it wouldn't help a
police officer who wants to beat up
people without being photographed, or a
would-be rapist who wants to prevent
victims from calling for help, because the
majority of phones wouldn't be
affected.
So what is this good for? Say your company has a research area
where no
cameras are allowed. That's a pain for everyone, because it is hard to
find a
phone nowadays that has no camera and that you can take into that area.
With
this patent, a company could create a "no camera" or "no phone call" area,
and
employees can take phones into that area, as long as they are phone models
that respect these restrictions. That would entice employees to buy such
phones and not others, or could entice companies to buy such phones for
employees, and not others. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
