Multiple display is a feature of X, not DEs
Authored by: cjk fossman on Wednesday, September 05 2012 @ 10:25 PM EDT
Right.

Except you don't hand hack xorg.conf any more. XFCE, KDE
and Gnome (2.x, anyway) all attempt to figure out what's
attached and do it all for you.

They all have varying degrees of success, depending on how
well their display management front end works. For example,
the lappy I'm typing this message on goes bug nuts if you
plug in the VGA display after turning on the computer.

The reason for my question is that XFCE has not, in the
past, been real good at recognizing multiple displays.

Maybe I should teach my laptop to boot to run level 3 and
have different versions of startx, depending on where I'm
running.

I used to have time for stuff like that, but now it seems I
need things to Just Work.
