I wouldn't expect the FBI to admit data mining. Imaging the outrage from people
who actually think the gubmint is neutral.

Apple Denies Giving F.B.I. Device Information

That information goes to so many places while you shop, schlep, even sleep. So the bad guys could literally pick it up in the street if they wanted. Far easier to get it accumulated and collated by someone else with a little less front door security than Amazon or Apple. So then the FBI got it from bad guys but couldn't do anything with it until they caught the bad guys doing something naughty with it. Meanwhile some gray guys got it from the FBI. What goes round comes round...

easily and readily available for almost anyone to pick up.
