Because I remember a lot of weeping, gnashing of teeth, and stamping
of feet when Google gave Samsung something to run on the trial device,
without -shock, horror- releasing the code. Headlines screamed
"Android No Longer Open Source", it was painful to watch.
Now the kiddies have their git everyone's forgotten that tantrum...

If you look around the forums the blame has now shifted to a collusion
between the carriers and the device makers whenever there is any
delay releasing code or binaries.
