Suicidal tendencies
Authored by: stegu on Monday, September 03 2012 @ 06:16 AM EDT
Apple have still decided to throw themselves
in front of the running train to try to stop it.
I don't know how they hope to survive the impact,
but perhaps they take their dead founder's words
as gospel: "spend every last penny of Apple's cash
reserves if that's what it takes to kill Android".

That's downright suicidal, and it does not speak
of a balanced mind. Not that I blame Jobs for being
thrown off balance at the premature end of his life,
but it is sad to see Apple blindly following his
lead here. They should know better.

Even with all the cash Apple has, I doubt it will
be enough. Android is too solidly rooted in Linux
and too strongly based around the concepts of open
and free software to just go away. Even if Apple
somehow manages to bring Android down, which seems
unlikely, there are other Linux-based initiatives
for mobile phone OSes: MeeGo lives on, WebOS is
not dead, and even "raw" Linux is now quite useful
on tablets without dumbing it down or locking it up.
Kill Android and another free Linux-based OS will
take its place. There is no way to turn back the
clock now.

There is nothing Apple can do except move on, but
instead of staying ahead, they have decided to get
off the train and wait at the platform to throw
themselves on the tracks, in the hope of at least
slowing down the trains that are rapidly catching
up to them from behind. However, some are already
ahead of Apple, and the others can choose a
different track and speed past them. Apple must
know this. They seem desperate.
