It Varied by Country
Authored by: Anonymous on Tuesday, September 04 2012 @ 12:43 AM EDT
At least this is my recollection:

Microsoft brought suit agains Lindows (as it was called then) in multiple
countries around the world. My recollection is Microsoft won or appeared to be
winning in a number of countries where English was not the dominant language.
Likewise, in some countries where English *is* the dominant language, I believe
including the USA, it looked very possible that MS would loose its trademark of
"Windows". So we saw the now common pattern of Microsoft (the
plaintiff!) buying off Lindows, the defendant. Most of the settlement was under
an NDA but it was public information that Lindows agreed to change their name
and also agreed to never again challenge the Windows trademark.

(Yes. All of this is from recollection. I don't have the motiviation to spend
possibly several hours trying to verify and provide links.)
