As I've mentioned before, I run a Minecraft server and client for my kids and
some friends. My PC is a recent AMD quad core, with 16 GB of RAM. (For now,) I
am using Ubuntu with GNOME, Unity, KDE, IceWM, XFCE, and E17 desktop managers
currently installed. With server and client running, the PC slows to a crawl
under GNOME. Granted, I am not tweaking for memory usage, but the PC just slows
until it turns to a brick after about 5 minutes. The system runs a lot better
with XFCE, although still a little chunky. KDE4 is my main desktop for this
minute, and the system runs smooth as silk with client, server, browser, and
office applications running concurrently. However, E17 looks best and, when the
desktop is tweaked for my icons and so on, it'll become house standard. As my
oldest one put it, when watching the game running with E17, 'the framerate is
ridiculous!'
