I fully understand why Apple is doing this.
Authored by: PJ on Saturday, September 01 2012 @ 11:27 AM EDT
I disagree. Apple is a design company.
People who care about that will always
buy their beautiful products. It's
something that you can try to copy, but
the real thing is always better.

Engineers-to-lawyers ratio
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, September 02 2012 @ 01:39 AM EDT
Some years back (maybe 2000), I read somewhere that the in the US ten times as
many lawyers as engineers were educated,
In Korea, the ratio was opposite; truckloads of engineers for every lawyer.

The consequences of that should be obvious by now...

Apple did make hardware long ago but they were lousy at it.
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, September 02 2012 @ 10:24 AM EDT
Apple last engineered their own hardware in the era of the
Apple II and Apple III, but they were lousy in terms of
engineering, reliability and build quality compared to the
competition (Commodore, various CP/M machines, IBM PC).

I remember when the Apple III came out, customers were
officially asked to drop faulty machines a short distence
onto a hard surface to see if this would seat the ICs and
cards properly in their sockets.
