"Apple's lawyers clueless" -- wishful thinking

That's just wishful thinking. The job of the legal department is to do the best legal work for Apple they can, not the best Public Relations work. Setting the priorities is a matter of upper management.

Repulsion felt by the public, sad to say, is something you mostly concern yourself with when making your career choice.

As an independent attorney, you have a modicum of influence on the fights you are taking on for whom. As part of a legal company or department, you basically have to take what you are handed and make the best from it.

Lawyers work for the client. Sometimes, they will advise the client to drop a
suit, for whatever reasons. Sometimes the client will insist on continuing. In
that case, the lawyer has covered his behind, and can continue the suit. Who
knows what went on behind the scenes. It would be very interesting to know.
