Actually the Audrey predates both

Reposting with my login. Forgot I'd deleted all downloaded content, cookies, etc.

The 3Com Audrey, with a touchscreen and keyboard came out in 2000.

But the EPod, is the granddaddy of them all and came out in 1999, and was out of business in 2000. It also had a touchscreen.

The Nokia N800 also came out in January of 2007, same time as the iPad. Not prior art, but just an example of apple was just one among many, and actually just following the pioneering work of the Dot.Com Bubble. The N800 was the successer to the N770 from 2005.

Lest we forget the Pepper Pad 3 (yes there was a 1 and 2 also) with touchscreen back in 2006: http://www.linuxfordevices.c om/c/a/Linux-For-Device s-Articles/Device-Profile-Pepper-Pad-3-web-tablet/

I'm leaving out the other pads/internet appliances/tablets/etc that didn't have touchscreens. Notably a great many of these devices ran Linux.

I love this link at Amazon.
First available November 19 2006. You can still buy one new:
ht tp://www.amazon.com/Pepper-Pad-Handheld-Computer-Black/dp/B000G0OKFU Uh oh! It's got rows of icons! Sue!. Ohh... wait... it has text under the icons. Whew! That was close.
