I think that 'sua sponte' covers this.
Judges can at times do things without having folks
filing motions.

This guy is having his 15 minutes of fame.

I have no doubt that the judge must be aware of the perfect storm the jury decision has called up. I hope she has time to read in depth from a wide variety of reports on it, and to watch the videos of the jury foreman enjoying his 15 minutes of fame. Most likely she has seen them. Her colleagues would have pointed them out to her even if she missed them initially. I hope the flurry of articles has educated her by giving her a broader perspective beyond what her legal resources tell her. She needs to know what ordinary folk think of it all, as in the end, the Law must serve the people, not the other way around. The Law must serve the people's need for Justice and Order. It is the people who give Law its authority.
