Android development started before iPhone development.
Android didn't have the massive resources of Apple, though, so development took
a bit longer.

The Android project was conceived and started long before the
iPhone release. The Android project wasn't a cynical attempt
to copy iOS. Andy Rubin started at Google in 2005 to launch
this project and the vision existed before that.
Incidentally, the history of Android and of Andy Rubin's
software philosophy are quite interesting.
