As a society we seem to have decided that monopolies are good. Many, perhaps
most, individuals disagree, but society isn't really governed by what most
people believe or want, but rather by what the powerful want (and believe
doesn't even enter into it).
For that matter, I don't think most people even consider whether monopolies are
good or bad. They just accept them as a part of the environment, and work
around them as best they can. They can't do anything effective against them,
"You can't fight city hall.", so think of something else.
As a software developer I have much more reason to develop a belief in this
area, and I choose the GPL. (Specifically the AGPL3.) But most people don't
have my reason to develop a belief.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The patent gives the owner exclusive control over others use of the methods,
designs or whatever else in the patent.
It doesn't provide for a monopoly enterprise, unless the patent owner can
leverage the patent to that end.

We have a double set of standards; patents good, monopoly bad. we
as a society need to choose.
I'm sure Napoleon would have
furthered that to: "Patents good, Monopoly Better", much to Snowball's chagrin.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
