"Chink" was not meant as racist...
Authored by: Anonymous on Sunday, August 26 2012 @ 10:10 AM EDT
I think the OP meant the technical sense of the word...as in a "chink"
in the armor....or a "chink" in the mortar.

It took a pointing out of the (now fairly archaic) racist usage to make me
remember it, so I think a mere caution was in order. "Nook", likewise,
is a current TM, so I don't think that would work either.

Other suggestions:
"niche", "notch", or "dog-ear" (for the model with
the diagonalled corner)

Language lesson - chink

Not the OP.
Until now, I had never heard of the word "chink" as referring to
East-Asian people. It took me reading Wikipedia to see it is a NA derogatory
colloquialism.
Chink, for me is a vulnerability, but thanks for the language lesson.

Far too sensitive!
Authored by: tiger99 on Sunday, August 26 2012 @ 11:50 AM EDT
For some reason, some people seem to be far too sensitive to anything that may be even remotely construed as referring to someone's race. It is utter nonsense. For example, if I am called a "Jock", it is not racism, although it may be construed as being slightly cheeky. It is only a nickname, no more and no less.

Racism is when you make allegations of inferiority or superiority, and it should not include general statements about the attributes of any particular race. For example, if you say that the best long distance runners are almost always Kenyan, that is hardly racist, but a statement of fact. Likewise,if you say that the pigmies are the shortest race, a true fact, not derogatory in any way. They happen to be well adapted to their environment.

But, getting very near to invoking Godwin, if you claim that the Ayrian race is superior to everyone else, that is definitely racist, because it asserts superiority.

I have frequently observed that those who complain of alleged, but not actual, racism rarely belong to the race concerned but are usually mere interfering busibodies. Actual racism is quite rare, at least in areas I frequent. I daresay it varies widely.
