Well, I have here a Nokia N800 Internet tablet, which I bought in 2006, IIRC. It
was preceded by the 770. I can make VoIP phone calls via my N800. Does that
count? What about my first cell phone, which I bought in 1995. It it's a
rectangle with rounded corners. Back when I was a kid (yes, we had rectangles
back then <g>), I had a transistor radio that was a rectangle with rounded
corners. Where do you draw the line?
When you make any device that's intended to be hand held or placed in a pocket
or purse, a rectangle with rounded corners would often be the natural choice, as
it has been for a very long time, simply because the rectangle is a functional
shape and you don't want sharp corners that could cause injury or damage. There
have been many examples of such in consumer devices over the years. For
example, take a look at the Instamatic cameras that Kodak created back in the
'60s. They are rectangles with rounded corners. Perhaps Kodak should sue Apple
for stealing their design.
