The foreman's patent is a a perfect example of the kind of junk patents that
should never be granted. He got a patent on stuff that everyone knew LONG
before he "patented" it.

Most likely he is a very poor designer and programmer. As they are learning,
most such people eventually discover by themselves some of the principles that
others discovered long ago. It is part of learning. I remember in high school
when I "discovered" euler's rule relating sines and cosines to
exponentials. The difference is that most of us are smart enough in our
ignorance to realize that someone else probably discovered it before us. The
foreman, it seems, is one of those truly arrogant individuals that no one knows
anything that he does not know. Every little thing he discovers on his own he
thinks is a remarkable discovery that no one else could ever have thought of.
