Note that Samsung could have licensed Apple's IP just as it licenses
Microsoft's IP.
Since Apple doesn't sue over its FRAND patents, only suing over its
proprietary patents (very much unlike Samsung), its offer of a license to
Samsung for its patents was very reasonable even in comparison to what
Samsung pays Microsoft now.
As a partner company to Apple, Apple was willing to give Samsung a
reasonable license to its core patents. And it would have even given Samsung
a further discount if Samsung would cross-licensed its own patents.
If Microsoft and Apple can bury the hatchet and end their war, Samsung could
have easily ended it war with Apple, with very reasonable licenses.
Currently, Samsung and Apple are involved in 50 lawsuits against each other.
This war could have been easily settled with reasonable costs to both sides by
