That reminds me...

In 2008, when I landed at Tokyo's Narita airport for the first time, I was very
curious about the unique Japanese touches I expected to see everywhere.

Probably the first thing I noticed and liked was the clocks at the airport -
digital, dark grayish coloured rectangles with rounded corners, and the digits
in orange. I liked their handsome look as well as the brilliant colour
combination, and I thought "Ah, Japan! The land of Hello Kitty. They
really know their minimalist design!"

I don't know for how long the clocks had been there - the iPhone had already
been released by then and was a rage in Japan. However, as decorating airports
goes, I don't think that they change clocks very often.

Now that I think more about it, I can recall many such designs created by the
Japanese replete in comic culture and other items.

In my opinion, this makes it very likely that if you took a Japanese designer
and tasked him with designing a phone like Sony, a Japanese company well known
for minimalist design would, a black rectangle with rounded corners and
eye-pleasing proportions would emerge as one among a number of design
alternatives.

I therefore fail to see why this has become such a big issue of innovation. I
do not dispute the great business sense and design chic that Apple displays, but
ultimately that is not the only aspect that can set a highly technical product
apart.
