Roger Fidler Invented the Tablet PC 1981

Roger Fidler had drawings and conceptual papers on Tablet
PC's in 1981. His lab was located next door to the Apple's
lab that switched gears at his urging for Knight-Ridder to
create content for the Newton. But the Newton wasn't even
launched till early 90's, because sourcing of chips and
batteries capable of powering it were not up to snuff in the
late 80's. Even so GridPad made by Samsung had already been
on the market and actually worked. But it's cost was prohibitive to say the
least.

By today's standards Gridpad would have cost $2000. But even
it was not the first touchscreen tablet device and PDA's were
not only cheaper, at a time when miniaturizing and smaller
was better, they could easily fit in your pocket. That's
really what killed Newton and the rest. Their size and weight
along with the fact voice touch screen pda's were the size of
a flip phone.
