More to the point, what was the ratio of genuine positives to false positives?

For example, nowadays we (supposedly) prefer false negatives to false positives
in criminal trials - "better the guilty go free than the innocent languish
in jail".

But in Elizabethan times, a 90% false positive rate was considered acceptable as
the price of defending the queen.

If McCarthy's false positives outnumbered his real ones, was his list real or
just included a few true positives by dumb luck?
