Is population growth, a Ponzi-scheme?
Authored by: mpellatt on Friday, August 17 2012 @ 07:19 AM EDT
Absolutely right. And the argument is made that amongst the reasons are:

i) With improved prosperity comes enhanced life expectancy, so you don't need to have as many offspring to ensure you'll be looked after in your dotage - a moot point with half- decent welfare states, but nevertheless at least a subconscious consideration.

ii) With economic growth often comes the need for both partners to work. This delays reproduction and thus the birth rate - because of a shorter reproductive period and also because fertility rates drop with age, multiplying the effect.

Is population growth, a Ponzi-scheme?

What causes what? Poor people fear all of their children dying and leaving them
without heirs or leaving them without care in old age. For this reason poor
people have more children. This causes a correlation between large family size
and poverty which is completely irrelevant to the question of whether population
growth causes economic growth, with the exception that you need to control for
it when studying the economic question.
