I remember using them when "Apple" meant something you ate to keep
the doctor away rather than gadgets that suck your money.
Hmmm...a [small round] gadget to keep the doctor away and fits in
your pocket...now that sounds like something worth patenting, especially if you

Yah, but did it have a FLAT SURFACE?
For NON-FUNCTIONAL purposes?
Did they go to a glass supplier and say, "forget all these spheroidal,
sinusoidal, etc., glass plates you guys make. We want to see if you can make us
some glass in a special design of our own invention that we call
"flat". We have engineering drawings to explain what we mean"
Or did they just buy something off the shelf that was insufficiently spheroidal
