Why do Ecuador protect suspected sex-offenders?
Authored by: Nivag on Thursday, August 16 2012 @ 07:09 AM EDT
Possibly because they know the main reason is that the USA is pissed over
wikileaks and the British government is their lapdog?

So there is fair suspicion that the charges are largely bogus...

Why do Ecuador protect suspected sex-offenders?

In some countries, a charge of rape is the usual and standard means of punishing political dissenters, and other undesirables.

These charges are politically motivated, making Julian Assange a political refugee, and as such, theoretically entitled to political asylum in a country that recognizes political freedom. Historically, that would be a Scandinavian country would be granting political asylum to an Ecuadorian citizen, or resident.

Because he hasn't actually been charged?

This whole saga - including an EU wide arrest warrent and threatening to *invade
an embassy* - hasn't been about a rape charge, it's been about wanting to
question him over *potential* rape charges. He may very well be guilty, but
until proven (or even charged with a crime!) that shouldn't be your assumption.

The whole thing is a ridiculous abuse of process, fan of assange or not (I'm
not, the guy is an egomaniac and yes, not everything should always be public
although governments *always* abuse that privilege).
