I bought a refrub Dell a few years ago. Recently the hard drive was making the
deadly clicking noise. So off to the store I went to buy a new hard drive.
Unfortunately they didn't carry the same size that I currently had, so I had to
buy a slightly larger hard drive. No worries I thought as the box stated that
it came with hard drive cloning software. So I install the new hard drive and
start the cloning process. Unfortunately it requires a MSOS. My refurb came
with a MSOS, so I boot into that. Note my family normally run Ubuntu. And I
start the disk cloning process. After four hours, it said that the cloning was
complete. So I remove the old drive and set the new drive as primary and reboot
the machine. That's when things went really bad. No OS was found. I tried the
Ubuntu rescue disk for grub repair, but no such luck. Grub complained alot
about /dev not being mounted correctly. So I installed the failing drive again
and went out to the Linux forums and asked what they recommend to clone hard
drives. About 70 percent recommended CLONEZILLA. So I download the ISO and
burn it to a CD rom. I rewire the old drive and new drive for copying again and
boot from CLONEZILLA. I had a 1.5 terabyte drive and bought a new 2 terabyte
drive. Clonezilla asked if I wanted to clone disk to disk, then asked expert or
standard mode (I chose standard). Then about 2.5 hours later it stated the
cloning was complete. So I remove the old drive and rewire the new drive as
primary and reboot. Up comes Ubuntu, not a single issue. All of the data
appears to be there. Everything is functioning normally. I now recommend
CLONEZILLA for all my disk cloning needs. Open source wins again in my mind.
The MSOS disk clone software provided by Seagate did not clone the disks
properly. And please note that both drives were Seagate drives. So it wasn't a
drive manufacturer type incompatibility. I might just send some money their
(CLONEZILLA's) way. I am very impressed with the speed and quality of their
software.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

Nikola Tesla was the father of the electric age. Despite having
drop-kicked humanity into a second industrial revolution, up until recently he's
been an unsung hero in history books. If you don't know who Tesla is, go read this. Tesla's final
laboratory is located in the sleepy town of Shoreham, New York. It's known
as Wardenclyffe and it's where Tesla attempted to build a tower that would
provide free wireless energy to the entire earth. Unfortunately, Tesla lost his
funding before the project was completed and in 1917 the Wardenclyffe tower was
demolished. Subsequently, the land was so to a film and paper
manufacturer.
However, the land, laboratory, and foundation beneath the tower
are still there and very recently went up for sale. And right now a non-profit
is trying to buy the property and turn it into a Nikola Tesla Museum. The
property is listed at $1.6 million, and this non-profit has received a
matching grant from New York State of up to $850k. This means that
if we can raise $850k, New York State will match us for that same
amount -- putting the total raised at $1.7 million.

Just spotted this on Techdirt:
Google
Launches 'Prior Art Finder' For
Patents
One of the big complaints that people make when
others discuss how obvious or non-novel a patent is, is that
it's impossible
to go back to how the world was at the time
the patent was filed. This effort
seems to take one step in
the direction of fixing that, though the quality of
the
results will matter quite a bit. I do wonder how useful this
tool will be
in the early days (especially concerning much
older patents when there wasn't
nearly as much info online),
but I could see how it would become much more
useful in the
future, as Google both improves it and when it's searching a
much larger database of knowledge and information.
I think I
hear the sound of a million patent monkeys
typing in prior art search terms!
Ahhh, what a happy
sound.... --- Userfriendly on WGA server outage:

“Without disclosure [Kim Dotcom and associates] will be
significantly constrained in [their] ability to participate in the hearing, and
the requesting state will have a significant advantage in terms of access to
information,” the ruling reads.
The documents to be disclosed are
significant in their scope, encompassing all elements of the case from the
allegations of infringement, through to information being held on the nature of
the Megaupload rewards program. Interestingly, as part of a section marked
Criminal Breach of Copyright, the ruling says that US authorities must disclose:
– All records obtained or created in connection with the covert
operations undertaken by agents involved in the investigations related to these
proceedings in transacting and uploading/downloading data and files on the
Megaupload site.
– All records or information and/or material provided
to or obtained by the investigation and/or prosecuting agencies by the
investigating and/or prosecuting agencies in this case from holders and/or
owners of copyright interests evidencing alleged infringement of their copyright
and/or complaining of such infringement.
- All records and materials
related to communications between relevant copyright holders and Megaupload
and/or its employees regarding their copyright interest, the direct delete
access provided by Megaupload to any such copyright holders, and any
communications between the copyright holders and Megaupload and/or its staff
regarding take-down notices.

Anton Vickerman is a British entrepreneur who operated a
search-engine called "Surf the Channel," indexed links to online video
content.
After an estranged former business-partner filed a complaint, he
was targetted by FACT, the UK branch of the Motion Picture Association of
America (a shadowy enforcement organization staffed with former police offers),
who played every single dirty trick imaginable, from illegal searches to leaning
on judges, to make an example of him.
He is going to prison for five years.
As his final act as a free man, he was written an extensive and well-documented
report of all the sleaze and slime that a vigilante group bankrolled by some of
the most powerful offshore companies in the world used to shut down his business
and get him jailed.
