Why do Ecuador protect suspected sex-offenders?
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, August 16 2012 @ 12:14 PM EDT
"Swedes are not known to be more earnest than other peoples in other
countries."

Wrong, they are more earnest on average. Look at
http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog/2011/dec/01/corruption-index-2011-transp
arency-international

"The world's most peaceful countries score the best. In the 2011 CPI, New
Zealand is top with a score of 9.5, followed by Denmark, Finland, Sweden and
Singapore."

or if you prefer the source

http://cpi.transparency.org/cpi2011/results/

where New Zealand (9.5), Finland (9.4), Denmark (9.4), Sweden (9.3) and Norway
(9.0) are the top of the world. The reason? It probably have something to do
with welfare and long histories of political stability.

UK has 7.8 and Ecuador has 2.5.

Why do Ecuador protect suspected sex-offenders?

I certainly would not trust Assange to be innocent of the Swedish charges. He
doesn't strike me as a man I'd like my daughter to date. But nor would I be
surprised to see him summarily cleared of the charges only to be immediately
extradited to the USA.

Espionage is a charge you level at your own citizens, not foreign nationals. For
the USA to go after Assange on such charges is pure pique. They've got their man
in Bradley Manning; he's the American citizen that handed over state secrets.
The charges should stop there.

The word "rape" is being used by the governments and media because it
makes Assange sound worse, but the laws in Sweden define rape a little
differently, so it's not quite what you're probably thinking of. I did actually
read some of the details and testimony of the case when it was in Swedish
courts. In the cases of both women, the physical sexual act was consensual
(admitted by them); it's a disagreement about a condom being used or not that
makes it fit the Swedish legal definition of rape.
