Nor does it cover the problems some research groups in academia face. We are
developing actual solutions to problems for which some NPEs have acquired
sketchy and overbroad patents from previous failed attempts to solve the same
problem. We are effectively blocked from commercializing our results because
someone failed at the task a decade ago, but staked out enough ground with
patents to cover any future inventions. It does not affect us directly, but it
affects anyone trying to implement our work in a commercial setting, and that
creates a strong drag on future funding for our lab.
