Are two charities I won't give time of day to (and AIDS, actually...).
Not because I don't believe they aren't worthy causes. But, in the UK, they
affect roughly one person in three, and typically both occur at the end of life
and are self-inflicted. Note I said they affect ONE person in three. Yet the
charities concerned hoover up roughly TWO pounds in every three donated by the
public to medical research.
As a programmer, not surprisingly I'm far more interested in Autism. My wife has
Parkinsons. As part of my research I acquired connections to the Wellcome
Foundation (which also won't touch those areas of research - for the same
reasons). And I got involved with a charity working with Cambodian refugees
which now works in Cambodia, setting up basic healthcare, trying to creae
"little society" where communities care for each other, and looking
after the casualties of the civil war. I can remember the charity magazine
proudly announcing that car accidents had overtaken land-mines as the leading
cause of death! And it wasn't that long ago! That's not worded very well but you
know what I mean ...
Cheers,
