In parts of China away from the big eastern cities the demand for
iPhone is so high, and the supply so low, that unscrupulous vendors
are at the least muddying the waters, and at worst downright
misleading and ripping off customers who have never seen
a real live iPhone.
A display case will have a large placard with a precise copy of
Apple's logo, typeface and their picture of iPhone. The devices
in the case will be from Nokia, Samsung, Sony, BrandX, with
sometimes one iPhone 3 for authenticity. No, I never attempted
to buy one, nor witnessed any sales. Discussion with some
possible customers revealed many would be happy to have a
Nokia iPhone. Shiny back panels for most other brands are available
with the etched munched apple symbol. Apple must have realised
this problem is so widespread that prosecuting it would tie up
the entire Chinese justice system for the rest of this dynasty.

thats all very well, but the point is, consumers cant be confused really
because the retailers are between the consumer and the product.
If you end up with the wrong phone, its more likely the retailer has screwed up
than you chose the wrong one.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I guess they're assuming phone purchasers can't read. I have a Google phone and
Samsung tablet. Both have there name clearly visible on the case. In fact, my
Google Nexus One has "Google" near the top of the back,
"htc" at the bottom and my own name in between. The tablet has
"Samsung" on both front and back. Apple should be more worried about
the companies that deliberately produce knock offs or even counterfeits.
