How crazy is this? Maybe they'll go to LXDE instead? IceWM? Why do Gnome and KDE
continue to live in la-la land?

Are you a misfit?
Authored by: Anonymous on Thursday, August 09 2012 @ 07:40 AM EDT
If you’re a Facebook holdout, or have chosen to abandon the social media hangout for any number of reasons, be prepared to be labeled a misfit — or worse.

Microsoft dips back into the realm of evil with its trusty patent trolling
Authored by: JamesK on Thursday, August 09 2012 @ 01:12 PM EDT
Microsoft has dusted off their tried and true patent portfolio and taken up Mafia-like bullying once again. The on again, off again love affair with open source is, seemingly, off again.

Conan O'Brien take on it

Not actually very funny but is now appearing on all the pro Apple sites as the funniest thing on the planet.

Now seeing a 'comedy' sketch like that wouldn't possibly have a chance of tainting a jury..........

Why does the $2.5 billion Curiosity use a 2-megapixel camera?
Authored by: JamesK on Friday, August 10 2012 @ 08:18 AM EDT
It’s not often these days that people get excited about 256×256 images or that anyone considers 2 megapixels to be “high resolution,” but when the imaging device in question is between 34 and 249 million miles away the story changes significantly.

Who has all those phones? Well I have 3...
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, August 10 2012 @ 09:15 AM EDT
That is:

One is an old Samsung Feature phone. Prepaid, the £5 credit
left on it means (as long as its not used up) that it will
never be disconnected.

Good as a back up phone, and for times when an expensive
smart phone is asking for trouble or not convenient, cycling etc..

Another is a last generation Smart phone a HTC Desire.
The phone company swapped out the sim from contract to PAYG
and again a backup phone for if I drop my Galaxy Note.

So, not too surprising really we change phones regularly and
keep them aground on PAYG as backup phone, just in case.

How Google's stealth support is buoying Samsung in Apple fight
Authored by: Gringo_ on Friday, August 10 2012 @ 09:24 AM EDT

I have always wondered what Google is doing to support Android against the Forces of Darkness. Now we know...

The firm representing Samsung has become Google's law firm of choice in matters of intellectual property. Quinn Emanuel lawyers have represented the search company in numerous patent and copyright cases.

It just so happens that Quinn Emanuel attorney Charles Verhoeven, one of the lead lawyers for Samsung, is also representing HTC and Motorola, two of Google's Android partners, in patent litigation brought against them by Apple. Quinn Emanuel also represented Barnes & Noble, which uses Android as the operating system for its Nook e-book readers, when Microsoft accused the book merchant of violating its patents. That case was settled in April.

House bill would reduce patent term for auto parts design patents to 30 months
Authored by: Anonymous on Friday, August 10 2012 @ 10:18 AM EDT

The bill has sponsors from both parties. The Intellectual Property Owners Association is worried about the precedent it would set, while the insurance industry and consumer groups support the bill.
