The whole industry knows that Gartner and its ilk are pay-to-play, so the normal
subscription fee (quite expensive) isn't hidden influence.

If they write about a topic, it's because some company paid the analyst. Not
directly to write what they want verbatim, but paid for the analyst's time while
they educated/updated/briefed them on the market/technology/issue. They don't
hide that's how the game is played.

Although they aren't quite as forthcoming when questioned about why companies
that didn't pay them are rarely included in the reports.
