The line example in good in the short term, but not a very good example in the
long term where innovation isn't linear, or there are real barriers in
technology. Like the phone from Zoolander the size of his fingernail. We may
be shooting for phones that small, but they _can't_ exist yet.
Not that I don't agree with your assessment about Apple's model here. I think
these phones are like pizza. People make pizza better than others, but it's
still just Pizza whether it's a circle, rectangle, square, or deep-dish.
Apple wants something iconic -- like those fancy red-soled womens' shoes (forget
the brand).
However, I think the iPhone is more the former than the latter. They were a
touchstone for the merging of PDA's and phones into a non-clunky device, which
is in more agreement with your linear example. Devices were headed this way
