I also contribute to Slashdot. It is my perception that the anti-Apple
sentiment is generally more prevalent than anti-Samsung. Some of the
more extreme Android fans seem to vote down any article that is even
remotely favourable to Apple at any opportunity.

Disclaimer, I have both Apple and Samsung kit and have been a
*NIX/Linux user for over 30 years.

It is my perception that both camps are to blame - Apple for using design
patents on what we can now all see with the benefit of hindsight is an
obvious design (although if it was that obvious why were there no 'phones
like the iPhone before the iPhone?). Now all smart phones have a general
look and feel like the iPhone. Samsung also appears opportunistic by
greatly increasing their market share in smart phones, when they were not
really a major player in that market by, you could argue, taking advantage
of being a major contractor to Apple and using component hardware
designs that were obviously designed for Apple and using them
themselves - Their packaging now being almost indistinguishable from
Apple's might suggest a lack of confidence in their own abilities?

I think it is interesting that the software that is used on Samsung's
'phones was different before the iPhone, where now it looks similar, but
perhaps that is a result of the touch interface?

In conclusion, I think that Apple's success may be down to taking existing
technology and combining it in ways that look obvious, but that no one
has been successful with before. Samsung's success has generally been in
technology and hardware design. Their software design is usually is poor
- My wife's Samsung 'phone is dreadful.

I really don't know what I am going to do when I have to replace my trusty
old Nokia, as I really don't like the way that either of them are behaving.
