Read the wikipedia article on the RIM case.
Firstly, RIM presented "prior art" to invalidate the patent - except
the prior art they presented actually post-dated the patent by about two years.
Oops.
And also the attorneys got into trouble for - iirc - ignoring the Judge's
instructions and doing something they had explicitly been ordered not to do.
Something rather serious.
The wikipedia article goes into more depth. I agree with you - RIM *should* have
won. But they sabotaged their own case.
