In California, people look at you funny if you don't drive everywhere. At least
they look at me funny. Of course, they may look at me funny for other reasons.
You can make your own assessment when you see me at the conference
:-)
Anyway, here are some potentially useful pointers from a few minutes of
searching. I'm fairly local, having lived near SFO airport and currently in
Berkeley.
If you have a hotel near San Jose airport, there's a free shuttle
that gets you to the transit center at Santa Clara University: VTA 10 Free Airport
Flyer.
Getting from SFO to San Jose airport by ground is surprisingly
difficult. My favorite is CalTrain, which goes from the Millbrae station near
SFO to the Santa Clara University stop. It's a commuter train with lots of
crowded trains at commute times and slow, infrequent trains at non-commute
times. But they're comfortable trains and CalTrain generally has reliable
service. Caltrain link
But first you
have to get to the Millbrae station. It's a quick convenient trip by BART, but
annoyingly expensive per mile because they charge SFO users a lot because they
can. BART link
I don't know of a direct
bus from SFO to San Jose airport. There are private shuttle services listed at
the SFO web site. SFO

Your hotel may offer a free shuttle, but it's most likely
to the nearest airport so it won't help you get from SFO to a hotel near San
Jose. OTOH, if you're visiting SF AKA "everybody's favorite city" during your
stay, having a hotel near SFO may be preferable, and some are near a Caltrain
station.
