And I would HOPE that paying readers are more likely to pay for decent news and
opinion, whether they agree with it or not.
At the end of the day people tend to choose a paper based on editorial stance,
so I doubt becoming more reader-dependant is a bad thing. The existing stance
can become stronger because there's less pressure to please advertisers, and no
change in the pressure to please readers.

I suspect that in general New York Times readers are interested in the
truth, so as long as NYT tirelessly ferrets out and prints the truth
they'll do fine. Readers who want to read convenient lies have plenty of
alternatives. I'm delighted that the NYT is now supported more by their
readers than advertisers, as advertisers often have problems with printing the
