...in the short-term, the evidence I've seen for global
warming hasn't convinced me that it is immediately
important. (Okay...increased carbon dioxide is probably
human-related, and probably results in a few degrees of
temperature increase...but...given the rather large
climactic effects from solar activity...et cetera...being a
bit warmer might actually be better. F'r instance, Canada
and Russia probably benefit.)
...in the long-term, there's a DOE report (can't find it at
the moment...sorry...try searching on carbon sinks and
algae) looking at remedies for CO2-related global warming.
They conclude that oil doesn't matter...but that
(extrapolating from measured data) and assuming that we
switch to coal consumption...there could be real trouble
(10+ C or so). At that point, they looked into various
carbon sinks (including algae, forests, pumping CO2
elsewhere, et cetera) and concluded that the practically
achievable carbon sinkage was significantly below the
expected carbon release. The current operating plan is
apparently to launch really big mirrors to reflect enough
sunlight to lower global temperatures.
This will work...but seems problematic as losing space-
flight capability after a century or two would probably
result in an extinction event.
