Indeed, GNOME Classic is a disaster, and much of what used to work, no longer does.

When I found that neither Unity, nor the GNOME 3 Shell were for me, I tried GNOME Classic, but it failed so badly that I decided that I would no longer upgrade to the newer Ubuntu releases. Ubuntu 10.04 remains my main system for now, but my next system won't be an Ubuntu.

Of course, you don't have to use Unity in Ubuntu (just like you don't have to use GNOME on Fedora), but I suspect that you won't really be a “First-Class” Ubuntu citizen if you run any of the other environments on it.

I'm playing with Linux Mint Cinnamon these days (which I initially installed for relatives, to replace an ancient Ubuntu 8.10 system on their computer), but in the long run, it currently appears likely that I will move to plain old Debian—probably running XFCE or LXDE.

Even though Ubuntu may no longer cut it for me, I remain grateful because that was the distro that allowed me to ditch Windows completely at home, and it introduced me to the Debian world.
