Many (not all) of the tools now needed to administer Fedora are customized to
Gnome only.
It used to be possible to do it via the command line. But not anymore - too many
of the configuration tools require a GUI, and those store the configuration in
more than one undocumented location. Try configuring NetworkManager without a
GUI. In very simple configurations (only one network interface) it is still
mostly possible (I've had problems there). When there are two or more wired
network interfaces, NetworkManager seems to mix up the configuration some how.
The only way I've managed to force things to work is to just disable
NetworkManager entirely, and use the previous sysVinit script for networks. That

PJ, I know you used to be a Mandrake/Mandriva type. Have you tried Mageia yet?
